Disney's Beauty and the Beast
Beauty and the Beast has recently moved from the Palace Theatre to the more intimate Lunt-Fontanne, and a recent visit there (my first since the show opened more than five years earlier) found the new venue to be indeed welcoming. In its new, somewhat more intimate environment, and with some spare chorus members and minutes of running time stripped away, the stage adaptation of this best of Disney's modern cartoon musicals is significantly better than it used to be. Steve Blanchard is effective as the Beast; I wish he (and the director) would explore the depth of this character more: if they did, they'd bring the show closer to The Phantom of the Opera and away from its DisneyWorld roots, which would strengthen the piece considerably. All the familiar songs from the movie are here ("Be Our Guest," "Belle," "Beauty and the Beast") and are put over with relish by the stars and their hard-working colleagues.
